Safety Travel Tips for Women Who Want to Travel Solo

Ladies, let’s face it. The world can be a scary place especially for us, women. Most of us are not entirely capable to defend ourselves when it comes to the worse case scenarios.

You might already feel unsafe in your locality when you’re walking home late at night. How much safer do you think you’d feel if you’re walking the streets of a foreign country where you don’t speak the language or know anyone there?

Traveling solo can be scary and utterly daunting, but women are still capable of doing so! Here are a few travel tips to make our solo travels a whole lot safer.

Scan Your Documents

It’s always unfortunate if your documents get stolen or damaged but it’s also not far from possible. It can happen and though we hope it doesn’t happen, it’s better to be prepared. So, scan your IDs, driver’s license, passport, health card and visa then send them to a friend or family member via email. Keep a digital copy on your mobile phone as well. It will make getting a new one easier.

Transportation Hacks

If you plan to use public transportation, take note of the following:

  • Routes – list them down ahead of time according to your itinerary.
  • Drivers – befriend the drivers and tell them where you are going so you don’t miss your stops. Other passengers can help you too.
  • Co-passengers – as much as possible, sit beside a woman or an elderly when you’re traveling alone. They’re easier to befriend but don’t suspect every male as well.
  • Fares – ask around prior to you commute about how much the fares would cost. That way, you only bring the amount you need.

Follow Your Instincts

This is probably the most important out of these travel tips. Follow your instincts. If you feel like you’re being followed, go to a crowded place. Avoid walking through a dark alley or using your phone while you walk around the city. Always be vigilant of your surroundings but don’t be too paranoid. ;P

About Your Accommodations

It’s smart to carry a business card of the place you’re staying at in case you get lost or have a hard time getting back. Be friendly with your room mates if you’re staying at a hostel or back packers dorm. You might end up exploring the place with them. And, of course, get on the good side of the hostel keepers so it won’t be difficult to ask them for favors when you need it most.

These travel tips won’t give you full-proof protection from danger when your alone but it will make you more aware and more careful of what goes on around you. The key is: have fun but be mindful.

Happy travels, hippie chicks!
